Buddhism, a religion, founded by Gautama Buddha in India in 6th cent. BC and later spread to China, Burma, Japan, Tibet, and parts of southeast Asia, holding that life is full of suffering caused by desire and that the way to end this suffering and to attain a divine state of release is through right thinking, self-denial and enlightenment.
